All the librarians in the district have been working hard putting together a program to teach you all about digital citizenship. We hope you will enjoy it. Being a good digital citizen is more important than ever. Please check out this video we made for you.

Since digital citizenship is the topic of our staff video, I thought I’d share this fun book read aloud with you. It’s called Once Upon A Time Online. The authors are David Bedford and Rosie Reeve. This is a tale all about how your favorite fairytale characters make mistakes online - but they learn from them. They learn by the end that you should always ask a parent or adult before going online.

Library Fun! Week of May 4th-8th, 2020
May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month!! Check out these videos for some kids' perspectives on this month-long celebration.  (Both videos are approximately 3-4 minutes in total.)

Because I was inspired by these amazing videos about Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, the book I chose for this week is called Lotus & Feather. It is written by Ji-li Jiang, and illustrated by Julie Downing. It’s a story about a girl named Lotus and a crane (which is a type of bird with long legs) named Feather. They become very close friends. I thought it was VERY interesting that this book is inspired by the true story of a crane that rescued a Chinese village! Enjoy listening to this book, read by actress Michelle Yeoh, and be sure to look closely at the beautiful watercolor illustrations. This book is approximately 13 minutes long.

Keep up the great work - I’ve heard how hard you all are working from your teachers!! I hope you and your families are all safe and healthy — and don’t forget to Keep On Reading!

    Week of April 13-17
For primary grades PK-2: the book is Arnie the Doughnut. This is a cute book about not wanting to be in your current situation, and adapting to change. (“Sometimes you’re the eater, sometimes you’re eaten.”) Link below:
For intermediate grades 3-5: the book is As Fast as Words Can Fly. This book is about a young black boy with a talent to write letters, and he receives a typewriter as a gift. The overall lesson is words DO matter, but your actions matter, too. It highlights handling adversity in the segregated south, as well. Link below:

Earth Day was Wednesday, April 22, and if we were in the school building, we would be talking about it this week in our library. I’ve also included an Earth Day coloring page, too.
PK-2nd grade: the book for them is I Love the Earth by Todd Parr. This book is bright and amazing - like all books by Todd Parr. It focuses on reasons why and gives examples of things we can do to show the earth love and care.

3rd-5th Grade: the book is Here Comes the Garbage Barge! by Jonah Winter. It is a silly look at the serious and true story of a garbage barge that left New York in 1987 full of trash looking to dump it several other places. All the other places it tried to go refused it, leaving the barge at sea for over 100 days! At the end, our reader -actor Justin Theroux - remains the listener to be aware of the garbage we leave behind. We could also encourage our students to further research this true story, and how this incident sparked changes in our country!
